About

The Hammersdorf Fortified Church is situated on the outskirts of Sibiu, overlooking the vast Cibin plain. The community was founded long ago by Transylvanian Saxons who prospered here for many centuries.
Following the revolution of 1990 many Saxons left the lands and moved to Germany, where they hoped to find a better life.
Meanwhile a determined circle of Transylvania-lovers has formed trying to preserve the unique culture of Saxon Transylvania and fill the abandoned buildings with life once more. The former Saxon school building now hosts educational events aimed at creating awareness for ecological issues. The parish garden is about to be transformed into a place to teach about ecological gardening.
